Oh, the things you find when you’re cleaning out your iPhone photos – like this memo from 2016 about leaking underground tanks at UNIVAR (formerly Chemcentral) at Main Street and Oakdale.

The memo refers to contaminated soil and groundwater at UNIVAR (6 acres) and raises questions about discharges at neighboring Highland/Hood Container (9.87 acres). Both facilities are owned by out-of-state corporations, have zero participation in the activities of this town, and their property taxation values have stalled for 20 years. Along with an unusable Staples LLC “hazardous” site (4.66 acres) that borders Highland to the west, and the 15-acre Teknor Apex/Viking Polymers factory hidden in the trees, these industrial facilities comprise the bulk of Jamestown’s tiny downtown area along Main Street – 35 acres.
Which is why we must ask Guilford County and NCDEQ: Surely you didn’t mean to blame ALL of the TCE and PCE on that tiny little dry cleaning operation across the street?!
