UPDATE AUGUST 9, 2025: The town’s (expired) wastewater permit application is still under review.

Last summer, when Jamestown’s expired Stormwater Permit was up for renewal, the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality said it found Jamestown “deficient in meeting all Stormwater Permit requirements.” Jamestown residents submitted written Public Comments to the NCDEQ expressing concerns about the town’s aging pipes, drains and culverts; inattention to the increasing stream flows during heavy rain events; lack of response and public information; and an overall lack of education and communication concerning our numerous streams and stormwater system.

The NCDEQ renewed the stormwater permit anyway. The wastewater permit is also raising concerns.

On Oct. 31st, 2024, the Town of Jamestown’s Wastewater Permit expired. A few days prior to the expiration, representatives from the NC Division of Water Resources came to town and conducted a compliance inspection. On Dec 9, 2024, the NCDEQ wrote a letter to Jamestown’s town manager with the results of the inspection, listing numerous violations, deficiencies and items “of concern” (swipe left or use the arrows):

This is the town’s response, written by the public utilities director, dated January 2, 2025:

According to the NCDEQ Application Tracker, the permit application is still “under review.” There was no public notice for comments posted for this application, but the NCDEQ contact in charge of the application is Nick Coco. His email address is NIck.Coco@deq.nc.gov. We have no idea why Jamestown’s wastewater permit is geolocated in Fisher Park, Greensboro on the NCDEQ application tracker map:
